The Loverboy method could become part of school curriculum in Germany
The Loverboy phenomenon is becoming a significant issue in Germany, especially in the state of Baden-Württemberg. This term refers to a disturbing tactic where older men manipulate and exploit young women, often leading them into dangerous situations.
What is the Loverboy method?
The Loverboy method typically targets girls aged 14-17 who may be facing personal challenges, such as family problems or feeling isolated.
These men first appear as caring and loving partners, gradually separating the girls from their friends and family.
Once the girls become emotionally dependent, the men often pressure them into prostitution, sometimes under the pretense that it’s necessary for financial reasons.

To combat this issue, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Baden-Württemberg is pushing for schools to educate students about the dangers of the Loverboy tactic.
Organizations like Terre des Femmes are also supporting this initiative. They stress that classmates and teachers can play a key role in spotting potential victims. Signs to watch out for include sudden changes in behavior, becoming withdrawn, or receiving expensive gifts from unknown sources.
Currently, the Ministry of Education in Stuttgart recognizes the importance of addressing sexual exploitation in schools. However, specific discussions about the Loverboy phenomenon are not yet a regular part of the curriculum. Related topics, such as those covered in Ethics classes, might be used to introduce the issue.
Loverboy cases are grouped now under human trafficking
A significant challenge in dealing with this problem is the lack of specific data. Right now, Loverboy cases are grouped under human trafficking, so they aren’t tracked separately. In 2022, the Federal Criminal Police Office reported 171 cases where minors were victims, with 156 involving sexual exploitation. Without detailed data on Loverboy incidents, it’s harder to create targeted prevention strategies.
The SPD and advocacy groups are calling for better tracking of these crimes. They believe that having more detailed information could lead to more effective ways to intervene and protect young people from these manipulative tactics.
As awareness of the Loverboy phenomenon increases, the push for education and awareness in schools is a crucial step. By teaching students, teachers, and social workers how to recognize and respond to warning signs, the hope is to prevent future cases and protect the well-being of vulnerable young women.
