Sex workers have serious concerns about their future in Germany
We read an interesting article in TAG24 about the ongoing discussion in Germany regarding the potential ban on prostitution proposed by the CDU. The article also delved into the opinions of sex workers on this proposed ban.
In Berlin, the Candy Shop brothel on Kamenzer Damm is a well-known establishment. TAG24 visited this brothel to understand how the workers feel about their jobs and the possible changes in legislation. The article describes the daily routine at the brothel, where around eight sex workers are available on three floors and about 400 square meters. Clients can visit from 11 a.m. to 5 a.m.
The sex workers enjoy their work at the brothel
The workers expressed serious concern about their future. They enjoy their work at the brothel, earn good money, and have good community. However, they fear that the proposed changes by the CDU, which would criminalize clients but not the sex workers themselves, could negatively impact their livelihoods.
The article also touched on the 2017 Prostitutes Protection Act, which was intended to offer better protection through mandatory registration, condom use, and other regulations.
Despite these measures, many sex workers, including those at the Candy Shop, are apprehensive about the proposed ban.
They believe it would compromise their safety and autonomy, worsen working conditions, and increase the risk of exploitation, stigma, and violence.
The Nordic Model has serious disadvantages
The model which criminalizes the buyer of sex instead of sex workers is called the Nordic Model or Swedish Model. Although the idea behind this system looks smart at first glance, it has huge disadvantages as well.
